As told previously the windshield on my 2014 Subaru BRZ was cracked.
I got it replaced by Clear Vision Auto Glass who came out and did the repair.
Some before pictures of the windshield and crack:
Notice the EZ Pass / I-Pass holder and former gated community optical sticker residue near the mirror mount. While this wasn't a repair I wanted to a pay a copay on it did have the upside of finally getting rid of that stuff.
The replacement worker then used a hooked knife / slicing implement and went all around the windshield breaking the seal. He then removed excess / uneven sealant. You should not touch the sealant with bare fingers as skin oils can cause gaps for new sealant. There are some plastic / rubbery bits that get removed at the bottom left and right of the windshield that also are a slight pain to put back in right, the left side can be seen well in the image above. The bottom of the windshield slots into a plastic / rubber lip.
He then placed a nice thick layer of new sealant. Apparently polyurethane is the sealant of choice for the Subaru windshield (maybe all windshields, I'm not sure).
He also was kind enough to clean up along the way.
Here's the windshield back on, exterior and interior views. It's quite clean. Also, note for the Subaru BRZ: even though we use the same overall mechanism as Toyota / Scion for the GT86 / FR-S we have a little shoe that gets screwed onto it to hold our mirror, don't lose this or forget to remove it.
As always I take a shot of the odometer for my records any time service is done.
One thing I've noticed is mess / bugs on the windshield are harder to clean off, which I think is similar to when the car was new. My guess is that eventually you get a nice coating on the windshield between my use of the RainX washer fluid and car wash cleanings / glass treatments that eventually the windshield cleans easier. We'll see.
Also, so far so good, no whistle at highway speeds.
Relatively painless.
Fair warning to others who might need this done, with current Subaru part availability it could get tricky if a bunch of us need replacements.
On the bright side due to the low volume of these cars and how new they are there is no third party aftermarket provider of the glass so all replacements (so far) will be factory glass. This means, assuming you have the applicable insurance, you will not need to pay the difference between aftermarket and factory glass if you insist on factory.
